A new Angus Reid Public Opinion poll shows Howie Hawkins, the Green Party candidate for Governor, easily topping the 50,000 threshold needed to re-establish itself as an official party in New York State.

The poll shows Hawkins at 3% of the vote, up from 2% in the prior poll.. 1% corresponds to 50,000 votes, depending upon the voter turnout.

Hawkins said he was cautiously optimistic, noting that the only vote that counts in the one of election day and many voters will beconfusedand intimidated by the new voting system. But he says that supporters and donations have surged since he was included in the Gubernatorial debate, with donations coming in faster than he can spend them. Hawkins launched a statewide media ad buy of around $10,000 and has been able to pay for mailings and phone calls to voters throughout the state.

Hawkins said that Cuomo's support for Governor Paterson's proposed layoff of state workers has also pushed a lot of workers in his direction. And as the gap widens between Cuomo and Paladino, more voters are no longer worried about voting for the lesser of two evils. Many WFP members are also angered by the party's decision to endorse the anti-union attacks of Cuomo.
