To Call for Halt of use of Reaper Drone, Return of National Guard, Challenge Cuomo to Stop Running from Debates

Howie Hawkins, the Green Party candidate for Governor, will hold a news conference on Tuesday September 28th at 4:30 PM outside Hancock National Guard Airforce Base on East Molloy Road in Syracuse.

Hawkins will also challenge his major party opponents to agree to an open debate with all the Gubernatorial candidates on the ballot.

As Governor, Hawkins will push to bring all National Guards troops home to New York to serve their mandated purpose. Hawkins also opposes the use of the reaper drones, operated out of Hancock, in the Pakistan / Afghanistan War. The NY Times reported today that the CIA has significantly escalated the number of drone attacks in Pakistan.

Hawkins has called to bring all American troops home to and cut the federal military budget 50 to 75% to create a peace dividend to rebuild America, pay for a WPA style jobs programs for the unemployed, and finance a quick transition to a carbon free America.

Hawkins will call upon NY Congressmembers to sign on to the letter by Cong. Frank and Paul urging the national Deficit Commission include cuts in the military budget in its upcoming report; only one of the 30 plus Congressmembers presently on the letter are from New York.

"The two major parties are always so willing to send our young men and women to die in foreign lands to protect the oil companies under the guise of creating democracy, but they fight as hard at the can to prevent real democracy here in America," asked Hawkins, a former Marine who organized opposition to the Vietnam War.

"Candidates for Governor like to pretend that they have no role in foreign policy. But we are fighting the war in Afghanistan / Pakistan right from Syracuse and we are sending our local National Guard to war. And the massive amount of tax dollars we are spending on this war for oil and gas hurts our economy while contributing to climate change," said Hawkins. US spending on the military has increased by two-thirds since 9/11 and now exceeds the rest of the world combined.

Hawkins will also discuss the Green Party US endorsement of the major peace, justice and education rally in DC on October 2nd. He will also respond to the recent FBI arrests targeting peace activists.
