Howie Hawkins, the Green Party candidate for governor, talked about his opposition to mayoral control of city schools this morning in front of the county Social Services Building, 691 St. Paul St.
Mayoral control takes away rights of voters to elect their school boards, Hawkins said, and that if voters in Rochester want mayoral control, they should vote on it.
Mayoral control proponents have said the mayor would be accountable for the success or failure of the district if a governance change was implemented.
Hawkins, who lives in Syracuse and ran for Congress in 2008, supports more taxes on Wall Street as a way to make investments in local communities.
