Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - Gubernatorial candidates Warren Redlich and Howie Hawkins took the stage at Nottingham High School Monday to discuss the controversial natural gas drilling technique known as hydrofracking.
Redlich, the Libertarian candidate, borrowed words from another candidate for governor when expressing his support for hydrofracking. "In the words of Jimmy McMillan, the heating bill is too damn high," he said. "So if you want to get the heating bill lower, you have to increase [the supply.] It is simple economics, the law of supply and demand. If you increase the supply of energy, the price of energy will come down."
Hawkins, the Green Party candidate, says he doesn't support hydrofracking. "We don't have time to waste or the resources to waist being stuck on natural gas," he said. "Some people say it is the bridge to the renewable future. I say that bridge is out and if we take that bridge we're going to go over the cliff of catastrophic climate change. So there's no reason to go forward with hydrofracking."
There is currently a moratorium on hydrofracking in New York, until new drilling regulations are approved.
