BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Green Party candidate Howie Hawkins is challenging Carl Paladino to a debate.

In a news conference outside of Paladino's downtown Buffalo office, Hawkins called for a series of debates to give voters a choice between the candidate's platforms for closing the states projected $9 billion deficit.

"If it's Cuomo versus Paladino, it's gonna be a debate over who can attack the unions the most, who can cut the state spending the most and I think that will take us into a vicious circle of debt and depression," Hawkins said.

Hawkins has proposed tax reforms for a "green new deal," which he says would provide funding to create jobs, clean energy and improve schools.
