The best editorials stir the heart or spur action. But an editorial accomplishes a purpose even if it just makes a reader think. At least, that's what editorial writers like to think. On the following subjects, however, the evidence of impact is, well, dubious.

Syracuse's Howie Hawkins is brimming with good ideas, well-versed on the issues. The perennial Green Party candidate has run 17 times, for federal, state and local office, always losing — despite our endorsements. In this year's race for Syracuse common councilor, we opined that "the man and the moment have met." The voters disagreed, returning the incumbent to office by a healthy margin.
