Those on hand for the Miner endorsement [Democrat for Mayor] included black Dem activists Bruce Connor, David Rufus, and 4th District Councilor Tom Seals, a three term incumbent who faces a formidable challenge from perennial Green Party candidate Howie Hawkins. Asked about Hawkins’ charges that the Council is moving too slowly on the problems facing the city, Seals responded, “The Council is interested in Green issues. The mayor has taken initiatives on Green issues. It may just not be fast enough for him.” Seals stated firmly that he would not be giving the eloquent Hawkins a chance to shine in debates as he had in the last mayoral campaign. “Debate is his game,” Seals said. “But except on a national level, debates are just a waste of time. I’d rather knock on doors and have people ask me questions.”
