Albany - Green Populist Party candidate Howie Hawkins of Syracuse should be on the Nov. 4 ballot in the 25th Congressional District race, a state Board of Elections hearing officer ruled today.

The decision means the battle to succeed retiring Rep. James Walsh, R-Onondaga, will include Republican Dale Sweetland, Democrat Dan Maffei, and Hawkins.

Dustin Czarny, a Democratic ward chairman in Syracuse and supporter of Maffei, had challenged the legality of about half of the nearly 6,300 signatures on Hawkins' nominating petitions.

Hawkins said that hearing officer Robert Brehm ruled he had 4,141 valid signatures. Independent candidates need at least 3,500 to get on the ballot.

"As things now stand, unless the Democrats take us to court, I'm on the ballot," Hawkins said.
