Syracuse, New York (WSYR-TV) - He ran for mayor of Syracuse in 2005. Now, Howie Hawkins is trying to win the 25th district Congressional seat. Tuesday morning, Hawkins says he'll announce his candidacy for Congress on the Green Populist line.

Hawkins says the two main policies of his platform include U.S. withdrawal from Iraq, Iran and Afghanistan, as well as universal healthcare.

In order to get on the ballot, Hawkins says he needs 3,500 signatures before mid-August.

That adds Hawkins to a pool of five other candidates. Dan Maffei is the only Democrat in the race. Dale Sweetland has the support of the Onondaga County GOP, and three other Republicans have expressed interest in running.
