LIVERPOOL -- The three candidates in the 25th congressional district engaged in a vigorous debate Wednesday night. The topics ranged from the economy to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and even some personal notes about what each candidate learned from losing a previous election. Of course, the economy was the biggest issue. The candidates talked about the need to create jobs and focus on the local economy. They also discussed how they could replace longtime member of Congress, Jim Walsh, who brought millions of dollars to the district.

The debate was not only watched by folks at home, but also had a studio audience. Some audience members were chosen to ask the candidates questions themselves in the WCNY studios and so did voters in the Rochester side of the district. The debate was also carried by the Public Television station in Rochester, in conjunction with NBC3.

Action News talked with debate watchers in the studio to get their reaction. Brian Woytan of Camillus told us, " I thought it was pretty intense. I kind of like Hawkins. I like his opinions on things. He seems like someone who is down to earth."

Debate watcher Brian Shouten says the debate helped him make up his mind on election day. He said," I was really up in the air. I didn't know exactly who is was voting for, but it really narrowed it down for me."

The televised debate was sponsored by WSTM and WCNY and moderated by Matt Mulcahy.

Because of the debate, Wednesday night's episode of "Knight Rider" will not be seen at its regularly scheduled time. Instead, you can watch the episode this Saturday, October 25, at 8:00 PM on CW6 (WSTQ).
