He is the third candidate on the list of those seeking the job of mayor in the city of Syracuse and he says it's time to break what he claims is the strangle-hold of the 2-party system over city government.

Green Party candidate Howie Hawkins wants to change the city charter to allow neighborhood assemblies to be formed across the city, helping to elect a larger, and he claims, more representative common council.

"That'll create a more responsive government. Enable people to participate directly in shaping their neighborhoods, like putting details into the comprehensive plan. Getting city services that respond more quickly and more effectively. And will engage the people of the city in finding the solutions. None of us who get elected have all the answers," he says.

Hawkins also wants to see a move to allow 16 and 17-year-olds to vote in municipal elections.
